Almond oil is one of the nutritious oils that has a long history in traditional medicine and is currently used to solve many problems. Almond oil is obtained from two types of bitter and sweet almonds, each of which has special properties and uses.
Almonds are a delicious food that can be consumed as nuts, made into flour and even made into non-dairy milk. Almonds are very rich in fat, and the oil extracted from almonds is widely used, especially in the industry of skin and hair care products.
Almonds are full of nutrients such as unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), group B vitamins including vitamin B2, vitamin B3 and vitamin B9, vitamin E especially in the form of α-tocopherol and minerals magnesium, calcium, potassium, copper, phosphorus, Manganese and zinc, high amounts of arginine as well as fiber.
Types of almond oil:
This oil has 2 main types, including sweet and bitter almond oil. As their names suggest, these two oils are extracted from different types of almonds.
The two oils have different uses, although the type of oil used in scientific studies is almost always sweet almond oil due to safety concerns about the possible toxicity of bitter almond oil.
The fatty acids in this oil are mostly oleic acid and linoleic acid, and it is believed that the possible benefits of this combination are the result of the presence of these two oils.
However, the exact amount of each component in any particular batch of almonds or their oil may vary depending on the type of almonds used, the year they were harvested, the location of the orchard where they were grown, and the type of processing and storage.
What is the difference between bitter almond oil and sweet almond oil?
The term almond oil, which is more popular, refers to sweet almond oil. This is the same product that has a significant use in cooking and skin and hair care. This oil is edible and is extracted from almond trees with white blossoms.
Bitter almond oil, which has a more limited use, is obtained from almond trees with pink blossoms. This oil is not suitable for the skin and if it does not go through the purification process properly, it may be toxic. Of course, this type of oil also has its own therapeutic uses. Almond oil is also used in aromatherapy and massage. A very pungent smell is a sign of this oil.
Applications of almond oil:
sweet almond oil
This compound is used as a carrier oil, meaning it is used to dilute other essential oils to make them safe for use on the skin. On the other hand, this oil does not evaporate quickly, has a mild smell and is easily absorbed by the skin. For these reasons, it is often used as a placebo or control treatment in aromatherapy studies.
Its role as a carrier oil also gives it unique properties when used to deliver drugs and other compounds. For example, a study conducted on 20 postmenopausal women showed that using this compound as a carrier for the transfer of progesterone hormone (as a nasal spray) is better than using another carrier oil (dimethicone). Because the use of almond oil caused more progesterone to enter the blood stream, which increases its effectiveness
This type of oil is also used for massage and skin care products. In addition, sweet almond oil is used as a flavoring in many types of food or even on its own.
Bitter almond oil
This oil is used in cooking as well as for various health related uses. In cooking, this oil is usually used as flavoring syrup. The taste of food-grade bitter almond oil comes primarily from a compound called benzaldehyde, which is also found in artificial flavors. This oil is used to flavor sweet foods and spirits.
This type of oil is treated with food grade to remove amygdalin (a compound in bitter almonds that metabolizes to cyanide) so that eating it does not lead to cyanide poisoning. However, raw (non-edible) bitter almond oil has not undergone this treatment and therefore we strongly discourage you from consuming it.
Health benefits of almond oil
Almond oil has not been approved by the FDA for medical use and generally lacks comprehensive clinical research. Larger and more robust clinical trials are needed to determine whether this oil is effective for any of these purposes, so talk to your doctor before using it.
